Restaurant: Studio Square – 35-33 36th Street, Queens, New York

The weather this past Memorial Day was gorgeous and for those that stayed in New York City, a trip to one of the beer gardens in Astoria was the perfect opportunity to kick-off the unofficial start of summer.

Astoria has three (yes, a new one just opened up) beer gardens. The ones that you probably know of are Studio Square and the Bohemian Beer Garden. My favorite is Studio Square since it has both gorgeous outside and inside areas giving everyone plenty of room to hang out and the food goes above and beyond your typical beer garden menu.

I’m not going to go on and on about all of the great options on the menu, but Studio Square really delivers in this department. Check out the menu and see how they take your typical pulled pork sandwich or hotdog and take it to the next level with innovative toppings and flavors.

7 Hour Pulled Pork Shoulder
7 Hour Pulled Pork Shoulder

My favorite item on the menu is by far the 7 Hour Pulled Pork Shoulder.

  • 7 Hour Pulled Pork Shoulder: provolone melt, sweet slaw, fried potatoes, Jim Beam Red Stag Onion barbeque sauce

The sandwich consists of pulled pork slow cooked and doused in delicious barbeque sauce, melted provolone cheese, sweet coleslaw and seasoned fries all stuffed between two oversized pieces of bread. A heaping side of fries also accompanies the sandwich masterpiece. This sandwich is out of this world. The pulled pork is perfectly tender and has a great tangy flavor to it thanks to the barbeque sauce. The coleslaw, which I generally don’t like as a side dish, adds to the overall sweetness of the sandwich and I brave my fears by keeping it a part of this creation. The fries are seasoned perfectly – just the right amount of salt to keep you coming back for more.

The Verdict

If you’re looking for a fun place to go this summer to hang out with friends, enjoy a few drinks and have some incredible food, Studio Square beer garden is calling your name. It’s just a quick 15 minute subway ride from midtown and I promise you it will be well worth the trip. Still have doubts? Take another look at all the menu has to offer. I love heading back to this place and highly recommend it. I definitely will be back (a lot) now that summer is here.
