Restaurant: Burger Club – 32-02 30th Avenue, Queens, NY
I recently visited Burger Club with Hailey, Laura and her boyfriend, Chris. Having wanted to try this place for some time, I was definitely excited to see how these burgers compared to some of my favorites at 5 Napkin Burger, Corner Bistro and Whitmans, to name just a few.
It was a nice day so the large floor to ceiling windows by the street were open and the restaurant had a great “open air” feel to it. The place has the ability to seat a good amount of people but on a Wednesday around 8 p.m. we basically had the place to ourselves. I wasn’t complaining too much about that though. The service was great and we basically had two waitresses making sure were were well hydrated (I”m talking about beer here) and that everything was up-to-par.
We were hungry so we ordered some appetizers as well as burgers.
- Braised Short Ribs: hand-cut French fries with cheese
- Onion Rings: fresh sliced onion rings in a delicious coating, cooked up golden and delicious
- Stuffed Burger: topped with smoked mozzarella, crispy prosciutto and basil pesto (my burger of choice for the night)
The braised short ribs on top of fries was delicious and definitely the stand out dish of the meal for me. Burger Club calls it one of its signature dishes and I can see why. The dish comes served in a skillet and it delivers on the menu’s description – fries topped with cheese and short ribs. And boy does this dish pack some flavor into it. The short ribs were very well cooked and melted in my mouth. This definitely is a staple for all my subsequent visits to Burger Club.
Not to take anything away from the onion rings, they were delicious as well! I won’t say they were the best onion rings I’ve ever had but it’s the presentation that sticks in my mind. They came served in a tiny fryer basket along with two different types of dipping sauces. One of which reminded me of Outback Steakhouse’s Bloomin’ Onion sauce. (I of course stuck with that sauce the whole time.)
Now onto the burgers!
I ordered the Stuffed Burger and it was tasty. I usually don’t get mozzarella on my burgers so this was a bit different than my usual, but the mild flavor of the cheese added just the right amount of additional flavor to the meat. The main reason I ordered this burger was because of the prosciutto on top. I love prosciutto. Unfortunately, the prosciutto was extremely tough and chewy. It either wasn’t high quality or should have been prepared differently. I’m not exactly sure what I was imagining but it wasn’t a tough, chewy piece of prosciutto.
Burger Club was a solid choice for a relaxing atmosphere to hang out with friends, enjoy some food and a few beers. The best part of the meal was definitely the appetizers, and in my opinion, these overshadowed the burgers. Needless to say, I would recommend Burger Club if you’re in the area and craving a burger but I’m not going to say it’s a “must visit” in the Astoria food scene. There is competition nearby with BareBurger and 5 Napkin Burger only a quick walk away. However, the prices are good ($7.75 – $11.75 for burgers) and they don’t rush you out, so I don’t see any reason why I won’t be back at some point.
