Restaurant: Local West – 1 Penn Plaza, Manhattan, New York

Finding myself in midtown on a Saturday night with a group of six and no restaurant reservations made (oh the horror!), we decided to check out the food at Local West, right outside Madison Square Garden.

Admittedly, this isn’t the most scenic area of New York City, but Local West has a rooftop so we decided to take advantage. The rooftop is fairly spacious with a bar and enough tables and chairs to easily fit 50+ people. They also have heat lamps so for those of you that get cold at night, once the sun goes down you can still hang out in the open air. As far as the view goes, you’re looking pretty much directly at the outside of Madison Square Garden so don’t expect much. The weather was nice on Saturday so it was also very crowded. However, the hostess/waitress was very helpful and pointed out a table that was getting ready to leave.

The Classic Burger with a Fried Egg on Top

I didn’t expect much from the menu at this place – mostly in part because of the location. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my food. I ordered:

  • The Classic Burger with Fries: bacon, cheddar and caramelized onions (plus I added a fried egg on top for good measure)

Now don’t get the wrong idea, the burger wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever ate. For the price and location though, it was a solid dinner option. The highlight of the burger was the fried egg on top. It put a slight twist on your typical burger and I loved it. Look for me to be ordering fried eggs on top of burgers again. Another thing that everyone I was with kept raving about were the fries. They had just the right amount of crispness to them and were doused in salt. The fries were probably a big hit because they were so salty but who doesn’t love a little extra sodium in their diet?

The Verdict

If you’re near Madison Square Garden before a game and looking for a place to grab a quick bite to eat and some drinks, Local West is a solid option. It will deliver your typical bar food and is very convenient (right across the street) from the Garden. Other than that, head uptown a little bit to grab a much better burger at 5 Napkin Burger or Shake Shack.
