Bill’s Bar & Burger

Restaurant: Bill’s Bar & Burger – 16 West 51st Street, Manhattan, New York

Looking for a so-so burger in midtown? Bill’s Bar & Burger can help out.

This past Friday night I headed over to Bill’s Bar & Burger bar in midtown (they also have a Meatpacking location). Since it was a Friday night around 7:30, I expected a table to be hard to come by. To my surprise, while busy, the restaurant was able to quickly seat us at a table by the bar.

The atmosphere at Bill’s was energetic to say the least. The bar was packed with your typical midtown happy hour crowd and the tables were packed together tightly so I did feel a little crammed. Luckily, despite the energy, the noise level wasn’t overly loud and you were able to easily carry on a conversation.

For dinner, we ordered:

  • Warm Spinach & Artichoke Dip: vegetable crudites, tortilla chips
  • Bacon and Cheddar Burger: thick hickory bacon, aged cheddar
  • House Salad with Turkey Burger: baby greens, tomato, cucumber, red onion, balsamic vinaigrette

The food was average and while good, didn’t go above and beyond in any way. The spinach and artichoke dip tasted like what you can get at Applebee’s and the burger tasted like the ones I cook on the grill in my parent’s backyard. The house salad with a turkey burger on top was also average. The turkey burger had a very nice flavor to it but let’s be honest, nothing can compete with Five Napkin Burger’s burger salad – the god of all burger salads. In my opinion, the best part of the meal was the sweet potato fries. I’m a sucker for these and they were delicious and had a nice, not overly saltiness to them.

The Verdict

Bill’s Burger Bar was good, but it didn’t deliver the burger I was expecting. Not to say any of the food was bad, it just tasted like something I could easily have made myself and saved the $8.50 per burger. I also wasn’t a fan of the a la carte menu. Unless you order a side of nearly $5 fries, your burger is just that, a lonely burger. If you’re in the area and looking for a burger, Bill’s will give you just that. However, it’s worth exploring to see what other options you have nearby. I most likely will not be going back.
